Minutes of the General Meeting of the Southern Illinois Association of Museums

November 17, 2003
Tamms, Illinois

In attendance:
Edna Anderson (Living Legacy Farmstead, Mt. Carmel), Dona Bachman (University Museum-SIUC), Mike Brush (Jackson Co. Historical Society), Claudia Dant (Wabash Co. Museum), Lori Huffman (University Museum-SIUC), Jackie Meadows (WHAM), Steve Parmenter (SIUC-Office of Economic & Regional development), Carla Smith (P.A.S.T.), Sharon Tuttle (Pope County Historical Society).

Jackie Meadows welcomed SIAM members to her two facilities in Tamm: the museum/classroom for special education students at Egyptian School and the WHAM on the WEEKEND Children's Museum, which was founded in 2000.

Jackie and her staff prepared delicious refreshments. Introductions were made.

Lori Huffman, University Museum, SIUC, chaired the meeting.

Museum Days
Pamela Madden, The Science Center in Carbondale, is organizing the International Museums Day event at the Carbondale Mall around May 18. Tables will be set up for the various SIAM museums.

The presence of a SIAM table at the Illinois Museums Day at the State Capitol was discussed. Lori Huffman noted that the University Museum will be going and could take brochures for other museums. Claudia Dant, Wabash County Historical Society, will check on the 2004 date.

Marketing our Museums

Dona Bachman distributed marketing survey forms to those who had not yet filled out their forms. She asked that any one with suggestions or questions contact one of the committee members: Dona Bachman, Adrienne Barkley Giffin, Patrick Brumleve, or Pamela Madden.

Logo Discussion

Member survey forms were collected. Discussion of the Logo continued; people should check the website. As a result of discussion, pyramids were added to reflect the Southern Illinois identity.

Collections Management

Lori led the discussion of "forms" in Collections Management, the first prioritized topic resulting from the brainstorming session at the Pickneyville meeting. She distributed a bibliography of the subject and copies of some of the basic forms that a museum needs based on the University Museum forms. She referenced the Texas Museums' Association's book, The Museum Forms Book, which provided many examples from which to draw up forms. She also reminded us that membership in the AAM allowed access to their Info Center and its extensive library of sample documents. Claudia presented a packet of basic forms from the Wabash County Museum District.

Claudia also passed out Mary Turner's article on "Museum Disposition of Property Act" which governs Illinois museums. Lori noted that the University Museum waits for 100 years after an artist's death before we assume the copyright has expired, but, even then, we must check to see if there is an estate, which holds the copyright beyond the artist's lifetime.

The following meetings were set up:
  • February 23 meeting will be held at the University Museum in Carbondale.
  • March 22 meeting will be held at the Pope County Historical Society in Golconda.
