When Mama Goes to Quarreling

From the song "When Mama Goes to Quarreling," written in 1950 by Mr. L.M. Sutherland, we learn what Mr. Sutherland thinks about several religious groups in his southern Illinois community. He sings the song himself in this field recording done by Professor McIntosh in 1952. The following topics can be discussed after students have listened to the recording.

  • How are our opinions formed? Are they always accurate?
  • What can we do so that we understand people from their point of view?

Tribe of Monkeys

Tribe of Monkeys is a social commentary that turns the tables on Darwin's theory and looks at man's behavior from a different point of view. This song was written over 100 years ago but many of the things that the monkeys find strange might be applicable today.

  • Identify the human behaviors that the monkeys find strange.
  • In what ways do the monkeys consider their behavior superior?
  • Why do you think Mr. Wolf wrote this song?
  • Individuals and groups of people often disagree about customs and behaviors. Discuss the benefits of looking at customs and behaviors from varying points of view. Expand this concept by choosing a current topic of interest and examining it from two points of view through role playing or a writing assignment.

People Play Music Just for Fun

  • Fiddle Tunes - Listen to Charles Wright playing two dance tunes on his fiddle. These tunes have been played for over 150 years. Why do you think these tunes have remained popular with fiddle players and dancers for so long?
  • Square Dance - When you listen to the Square Dance recording, pay attention to the rhythm of the instruments and to the dance directions given by the caller, Uncle Bill Hargraves. What was the job of the musicians? What was the job of the caller?
