Finding History in Your Town
What unusual things have happened in your town? Every area has its own special history, and you can find out about it. Here are some suggestions of places to look and people to ask.
- Check with your local newspaper. Most newspapers have a library where old copies are filed. They also often have special files on specific events.
- Visit the public library in your town. Ask for the area of the library in which information about local events and people is kept. The librarian may also be able to give you the name of a local county historian or the local historical society.
- If your town has a local radio or television station, ask for their help. They may have old news video or newscasts that would be of help to you.
- See if you can find a list of the historical markers in Illinois or in your local area. These markers tell about local events and people who are significant in the history of the area. When you identify these events, you can begin looking for information.
- Ask the older people in your community. Check with neighbors, people at your church, relatives. Ask at the local community center and Senior Citizens' center.
- Your town may have a general store, a drug store, a community center or other place where people gather to talk. Ask the people there about their memories.
- Ask if you can put a notice on a community bulletin board (perhaps at the post office or grocery store) stating that you are looking for people who know about life in your town 50 years ago.
