In Vietnam walking, riding bikes, and driving motorcars are ways to get around.

Houses there are made with straw, palm leaves, and wood.

The land is fertile. The main crop is rice. Rice fields are called paddies. The entire family works to help grow rice. The Vietnamese people were the first in Asia to use irrigation.

It is very hot. Big round hats are worn to keep cool. (see photo opposite)

The two most popular religions are Buddhism and Taoism.

Tet is the most important festival in Vietnam. It lasts a week. It is the Vietnamese New Year and is celebrated in late January or early February.

The oldest son must care for parents and relatives.

Fish is an important part of the Vietnamese diet.

Funerals in Vietnam are different because they have bright colored funeral carts. In North Vietnam since the war, traditional funerals have been banned.
