The Battle of Antietam

On Sept. 17, 1862 General George McClellan marched his army into Sharpsburg, Maryland ready to attack General Robert E. Lee's army.

Objectives of the Union army were to attack the Confederates, and try to destroy most of their army. The Union army's strategies were to make a wedge with they're army in between the army of the Confederates that General Lee divided in two.

Objectives of the Confederate army were to free Virginia of all Yankee invaders. The strategies used to try to achieve this goal were to take the war north of the Potomac by making the Union army follow them across.

Mistakes that were made by the Confederates are General Lee let order 191 fall into the hands of Union General George McClellan. The mistakes made by the Union army are they did not follow the confederates into Maryland.

The victor of the battle of Antietam was the Union army. The fatalities in the Union were 2,100. The fatalities of the Confederates were 2,700.
