Illinois Artists

(The images you see on this page are digital photographs taken of actual artifacts and objects which belong to the University Museum)

This ceramic sculpture was created by Louise Paine in 1942. The limited knowledge we have on Paine reflects a documentation problem for many artists involved in the relief programs during the Great Depression. We do know that Paine was involved with the Works Progress Administration's Art Program in 1942. She also worked as a faculty assistant in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Southern Illinois Normal University from 1941-1945.

This work titled "Oval Forest Nest," was created by Dan Johnson for the University Museum in 1997. The design for this bench was the winner of the Museum's Seat Art competition that year. Johnson received an MFA in Fine Art from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Besides creating outdoor sculpture, Johnson also works with ceramics, glass, and painting.
