Loan Kits

To supplement classroom instruction or group discussion the following materials may be borrowed from the University Museum for a two week period. Pick up and return is made at the University Museum Office in Faner Hall, C Wing (Room 2469) on the SIUC campus.
Call the University Museum at (618) 453-5388 to arrange a time for pick up of the loan materials.

In many cases, materials may be also delivered through the Shawnee Library Loan System. Contact Bob DeHoet, at (618) 453-5388 or by email at drhoet@siu.edu, for further details.

Artifact Kits

Kits contain 10-12 items, printed materials that provide a basis for classroom learning, includes a detailed description of each item, a bibliography and suggested use.

To add to better understanding of our world and to promote a stronger appreciation of southern Illinois, the following slide/script programs may be scheduled for classroom groups or community organizations by calling the University Museum at, (618) 453-5388. Includes an in-depth look at the woodcarvings of southern Illinois artists Fred Myers; Southern Illinois Ethnic Handcrafts; and Blacksmithing and Ironwork

African and Melanesian Art

Includes artifacts and musical instruments from various countries in Africa and selected artifacts from New Guinea and the surrounding Melanesian Islands

CCC in Southern Illinois

The twenty-six Civilian Conservation Corps camps of southern Illinois are depicted along with explanations of the federal program's organization and impact, and the work projects completed in southern Illinois, 1933-1941

Religious History of Southern Illinois

After a brief look at the spirituality of Americans Indians of southern Illinois and the early Catholic priests of the frontier, this program examines the three principal church denominations of the nineteenth century in southern Illinois; the Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians with a brief explanation of splinter groups

This program looks at Mississippi Farms and Towns (A.D. 900-1500)

When the First Green Things Pop Up

This program introduces the wild food gatherers and preparers, herb doctors, and medicinal root diggers of the Shawnee Hill Region. Through their own words, they share knowledge of some of the plants harvested during the spring months, and some wild food recipes and home remedies

Music Sounds of Yesterday

This audio-visual program shows musical instruments from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Includes song sheets of this period. Collected by Naoma Williams and Claudine Bradley

Multi-Resource Program

Hearts and Homes: Ethnic Architecture of Southern Illinois

This program shows how ethnic groups changed the landscape of southern Illinois. The program includes a slide/script program, a display, information booklets, and a simulation game. Produced with a Illinois Humanities Council minigrant.

Mini-Slide Script Programs

These short programs have been developed for use with preschool children. They contain colorful pictures to introduce children to a variety of topics: Indians, Pioneers, Dinosaurs, Birds, and Wildflowers.
