Masters of Photography from the Museum's Collection

![]() Photo: Waterboy, Mississippi Delta, 1938 by Dorothea Lange | The "Masters of Photography" exhibit, curated by Lori Huffman, Curator of Collections at the Museum, features twenty-five photographers and thirty images. They illustrate the range of photographic styles and subjects from the social realism of Jacob Riis and Dorothea Lange to a celebrity photograph of Gloria Swanson by Edward Steichen, from urban documentation by Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans and Helen Levitt to imaginative landscapes by Henri Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. The earliest photographer represented is Jacob Riis (1849-1914); the latest include Bruce Davidson (b.1933), Jerry Uelsmann (b. 1934), and George Krause (b. 1937).
Most of the works in the University Museum's photographic collection were purchased in the 1960s at the initiative of President Delyte Morris through the Architectural Arts Fund that no longer exists. |
A Warrior's Story: Oglala Sioux Buffalo Robe, curated by Lori Huffman

One of the treasures of the Museum's collection is this Plains Indian buffalo robe. The illustrations tell the story of one warrior's prowess.
Remembering Old Main (ongoing)
August 24th, 2009 - May 31st, 2010
The Old Main building graced the SIUC campus for over eighty years. It was built on the foundations of the original campus building, the Normal Building, which burned in 1883. 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the burning of Old Main. The exhibition features architectural fragments, historic photographs and video of the burning supplied by WSIU-TV.
Miniature Pioneer Dioramas of Southern Illinois Life (ongoing)
August 24th, 2009 - May 31st, 2010
These iconic miniatures are among the Museum's signature works. Created in the 1930 by Works Progress Administration workers at SIUC, these depictions of Southern Illinois life in the early 1800s have been viewed by museum goers for nearly eighty years.
Fossils: Life Through Time in Southern Illinois (ongoing)
August 24th, 2009 - May 31st, 2010
Based on the collection of the late professor George Fraunfelter, this exhibit traces prehistoric life in Southern Illinois from its beginning to the 1800s.
Steven Poster, Around the Edges

Steven Poster attended SIUC in the Cinema & Photography Department in the early 1960s. He went on to establish himself in Los Angeles as a renowned cinematographer, working on such varied films as Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Stewart Little 2. For this exhibition he shows his large-scale black and white photographs from the past four decades, ranging from urban subjects to haunting rural scenes. |
